Planking is the action of lying flat on your stomach with your face down and your hands against your body – to resemble a plank – in unusual and sometimes dangerous situations and photographing it. Photographs of such exploits are then shared through social media sites. Points are awarded for an original location and for the number of spectators and participants involved. This is planking, described variously as a global participatory art project, the lazy man’s free-running, a “pointless internet craze”, the new flash-mobbing and, in the words of one incensed online commenter, “a sick, pagan pastime"
